Students Go A Year Without English Teacher

By Nick Nicoludis Thursday, May 20, 2010

Amazing Kids Workshop Middle_SchoolHow do 20 students go a full year without an English teacher? Answer: Through lies, a conniving principle, unions and a teacher shortage. Students at Manhattan Middle school did not attend any English classes for an entire year because school officials said they didn’t have enough staff. What’s worse, is the students have to take the state’s English this month–without preparation.

Mildred Taylor, a teacher at the school, was assigned to teach English because there was no one else to instruct the class. She complained to her union and they subsequently instructed her to not to teach it. The scandal came to light when Taylor noticed that grades she had given to students in her Humanities class were being used as grades for an English class. On student’s report cards there is no mention of the Humanities class Taylor had been teaching, only a grade for a mysterious English coarse.

Taylor is refusing to submit grades for the third quarter, and insists that she is not qualified to teach English and all allegations of a wrong-doing should be focused on the school’s principal Brenda Hollomon, who allowed the grade swapping to happen. The question is: Why would a principal, when she knew students would have to take state exams, let kids go without a teacher?

Maybe this is further proof that the American educational system is failing, or it’s time to introduce educational robots I like to call Teach-Bots. Either way, the Department of Education is investigating possible grade tampering, and Hollomon refuses to comment. It’s a sad day for middle school students, teachers/principals and English majors across the country.
