Watch: Arturo Castro’s Virtual Realtime Wax Museum

Arturo Castro, a Barcelona-based designer, created a program that melds the user’s face into another face in real time with visually unnerving results.

What’s more unsettling is that the software was developed using opensource frameworks with bits and pieces from other designers’ work. It would be surprising if this didn’t become an app very soon, or perhaps part of the next PhotoBooth. The technology has only been released for 2 days, so stay tuned.

The demonic contours and textures emblazoned on Castro’s moving face are definitely weird, especially when he becomes the other Castro (11 seconds into the video). And yes, it’s a little rough around the edges, but it’s also the first technology of its kind.

Open source software is the wave of the future, and young designers know it. There are much more serious developments to have come in this realm, and also countless fun ones. The great thing is that it undermines copyright (read: copywrong). For now, the amusing shape-shifting of Arturo Castro will serve to distract, excite, and puzzle us.
