The stylings of cyber-punk, Tron and a bit of Star Fox 64 come together in Will Joines’s new video for Com Truise’s buck nasty track “Brokendate.”
As Stereogum, who premiered the video for Com Truise’s buck nasty track “Brokendate” pointed out, the video and music work seamlessly together.
There is enough narrative to draw interest without overshadowing the music, and at parts the visual landscape leaves live-action behind to travel through graphed structures that remind me a bit of the Star Fox video games. Tension, intrigue, dystopia: they’re all here.
Sonically, in “Brokendate” Com Truise borrows from a host of digital places: one can hear the comfortingly slow, warbling gestures of Boards of Canada/Hell Interface, the large, throwback disco groove of Crystal Castles, and even elements of codeine-laced hip hop. However Com Truise is not a copycat, and his style speaks for itself.
