Want to combat the NYPD’s Long Range Acoustic Devices (LRAD)? Bring some earphones.
Today, the NYPD deployed Long Range Acoustic Devices, or LRAD or “sound cannon,” against Occupy Wall Street protesters, which emit long range piercing audio at two to five second bursts. It’s a painful but supposedly “harmless” way to disperse crowds without resorting to good old rubber bullets, gas canister and concussion devices.
RT caugh the NYPD using an LRAD on camera, which can be viewed below.
A protester named Joshua Paul sent this tweet just after the sound cannon was used, “High pitched noise. Natural reaction: My face scrunched and hands started moving to my ears. Length was around 5 seconds.”
To counter the sound cannons, simply purchase a few packages of ear plugs. All Occupy movements should certainly consider distributing free ear plugs for protesters to protect their ear drums and their right to protest.
And for good measure, protesters should look at the NYPD, point to their earplugs and smile.
