Florence does great justice to the ‘Take Care’ track.
The title track from Drake‘s latest album, “Take Care” is one of the album’s best. Featuring Rihanna and being based on the Gil Scott-Heron/Jamie xx collaboration, “I’ll Take Care of You,” it’s a hauntingly beautiful track, but Florence and the Machine‘s recent live cover may have it beat.
Recorded at the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge, Florence’s cover remains faithful to the original’s pacing but ditches the club beats in favor of accentuating the song’s quieter moments. Her vocal jumps back and forth from Drake’s and Rihanna‘s parts, staying hushed and calm during Ri’s refrain while taking the Drake melody and pushing it into a higher register. Steady strings keep it tense, being joined by a tremolo guitar part that waxes and wanes throughout. Its cymbal rush conclusion even borders on some Sigur Rós territory pushing the song to a nice climax. This cover is also further confirmation that The xx (and member Jamie) are becoming one of the most covered bands of this generation.
