Radiohead’s master of effects pedals will score “The Master.”
Now that Radiohead has officially cut the umbilical chord tethering them to any last bit of the pop sensibility that brought us “Creep” and reared its head all the way through “In Rainbows,” Jonny Greenwood’s second career as a film composer actually doesn’t seem like that much of a leap. When it comes to rock guys scoring movies, I guess Trent Reznor’s turn on “The Social Network” and “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” should seem more novel.
Nonetheless Radiohead remains a beacon of advanced artistic taste, and Greenwood is likewise batting 1000 in his film career so far. From Paul Thomas Anderson’s “There Will Be Blood” to Tran Anh Hung‘s adaptation of Haruki Murakami’s “Norwegian Wood” to Lynne Ramsay’s new “We Need to Talk About Kevin,” Greenwood seems allergic to getting involved with bad (or at least inconsequential) movies.
Yesterday Collider announced that Greenwood will reunite with Paul Thomas Anderson for Anderson’s new movie “The Master.” The movie sounds like a thinly veiled tale about Scientology—just slightly less thinly veiled than “South Park’s” infamous episode “The Closet.”
It centers on a very L. Ron Hubbard-sounding character played by Philip Seymour Hoffman who “launches a faith-based organization” shortly after World War II, and struggles with the tensions that flare as it gains a fanatic following. It costars Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams, and is due out sometime in late 2012.
It’ll be interesting to see what kind of blowback Anderson gets from Hollywood’s Scientology elite for this one. Below, check out the Greenwood-scored trailer for “Norwegian Wood.”
