Before I developed anything even remotely resembling a social life, I spent most of my Saturday nights lying lazily on the couch watching Saturday Night Live. It became a staple of my weekends, and frequently the highlight. After school I would even watch old episodes from the early-mid-90s on Comedy Central—for a while it was probably my favorite show on television. However what I remember most vividly, more than any hilarious skit or host, was the fact that “Showtime at the Apollo” came on afterwards.
As a white kid from the suburbs I couldn’t help but be mesmerized by the show. There was so much energy. It was so loud and the crowd contained the harshest critics I’ve ever seen. Amateur night at the Apollo was infectious, especially considering I thought this was filmed live at 1 a.m. in Harlem. Now, I don’t remember specific acts (except maybe Brian McKnight), but I do remember the crowd’s reaction to the bad ones and “the executioner” sweeping them off stage.
So when the video surfaced of President Barack Obama singing Al Green‘s “Let’s Stay Together” during a fundraiser at the famous Apollo Theater yesterday, I couldn’t help but laugh at the thought of “the executioner” sweeping the Commander and Chief off stage. Of course this didn’t happen, and quite honestly Barack didn’t sound too bad. He shouldn’t quit his day job, but I’m sure Al Green — who was in attendance — appreciated the tribute.
The President’s song selection of “Let’s Stay Together” was most likely a subliminal message about his reelection in 2012. But you never know, it could be his go-to karaoke as well.
Check out Obama’s brief rendition of the R&B classic below.
