Since Die Antwoord arrived on the international music scene a few years ago, there’s been the ongoing question over whether they are serious or simply pranksters. The question is really irrelevant because, in the final analysis, all that matters is whether listeners can dig the music and derive some amusement or piqued curiosity from the band’s collective persona.
The interplay between Ninja, a hilariously tough white-trash rapper, and Yo-Landi Vi$$er, an oddly sexy amalgamation of elf and alien, is to blame for the continued fascination. Ninja raps alternately between Afrikaans and English, thriving on verbal velocity, while Yo-Landi sings like a trance diva huffing helium from birthday party balloons—styles so divergent that one can’t help but be temporarily stunned by their songs.
Die Antwoord’s latest LP “Ten$ion” is due out February 7th on the band’s own label.
