Wilco stopped by “Conan” the other day to play two cuts off their refreshing 2011 record, “The Whole Love,” and now one of the highlights from that album has an equally great animated video.
Set up like an old “Popeye” cartoon, “Dawned On Me” features the whole gang from the original strip, including Olive Oyl, Bluto, Wimpy, and Swee’ Pea, all licensed directly from King Features Syndicates. The story follows the usual exploits of the cartoon, with Bluto running off with Olive Oyl, from which Popeye has to save her. The video does have an unusual ending where Olive Oyl falls in love with frontman Jeff Tweedy though. Sorry Olive, he’s married.
The characters also dance and interact with the other members of Wilco, with Nels Cline taking Swee’ Pea and using him as a bow on his guitar, and Wimpy managing to pull a hamburger from behind Pat Sansone’s ear. The video also features a (possibly) fake advertisement for a forthcoming Wilco brand spinach product, which wouldn’t be that weird if you consider the Wilco Tango Foxtrot beer.
Check out the video below.
