South African act Die Antwoord recently dropped their latest single “I Fink You Freaky” on us, along with its visually captivating video. Now their whole album, “Ten$ion,” is available for streaming over at 3voor12.
The back-and-forth between the crusty and trashy Ninja and elfin, high-pitched Yo-Landi Vi$$er remains striking and compelling. It still doesn’t settle the question of whether they’re serious or simply pranking us all, but it really doesn’t matter. The album is enjoyable, with their mix of English and Afrikaans alongside their combination of rap, techno and thrash blending together. It’s goofy and jarring, but it’s fun.
Music doesn’t always have to be serious. Besides, you have to respect a band that works “Yippee-ki-yay motherfucker” into a song.
