Of course Michele Bachmann thought she was the ‘perfect candidate’

The 2012 presidential election may be over for Michele Bachmann, but fortunately that doesn’t mean her opinions will cease to be heard. Her campaign for president was marred by extremely conservative views on homosexuality and same sex marriage, as well as a bad habit of projecting craziness.

The Minnesota representative’s campaign was simply one long running public relations nightmare. Bachmann’s husband ran a counseling center where he attempted to turn gay men straight. Bachmann herself has referred to homosexuality variously as a “sexual dysfunction,” “sexual identity disorders,” and “personal enslavement” that leads to “sexual anarchy.” She didn’t know Libya was in Africa, and had an 8-year-old tell her that his “gay mom doesn’t need fixing” in a YouTube video that went viral. Bachmann was even mocked by the Roots’ drummer, Questlove, on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.”

Nevertheless, in typical vain and egotistical Republican fashion Bachmann still believes she was the perfect candidate for Obama’s job.

“I was. I was the perfect candidate. America had their chance with the perfect candidate. But any of our candidates are going to be acceptable to the American people. More than acceptable, because right now, if you look at the Gallup map that came out this week, President Obama is in big trouble all across the country.”

This was Bachmann’s response to a question from Bloomberg TV’s Al Hunt when asked who she thought was the most conservative candidate remaining in the 2012 presidential race. This is also another prime example of the GOP’s tendency to shoot itself in the foot. Here is a candidate, now completely out of the race, given the opportunity to help her the party by saying which remaining candidate she thinks would have the best chance to beat Obama in the upcoming election, yet she takes the opportunity to toot her own horn.

While this kind of behavior isn’t much of a surprise, and Bachmann’s high opinion of herself is to be expected, this is just another example of politicians serving themselves more than their country. Granted, this is only a small case in point, but it is this stubborn self-centered behavior by our elected officials — particularly by some members of the Republican party — that has stunted our recovery as a nation.
