Rufus Wainwright’s brand of dreamy slurred-pop is back and hits hard with “Out Of The Game”, his first new song in a while. As per usual, Wainwright spends two thirds of the track sounding as if he is awakening from a qualuude-induced slumber and the remaining third sounding as if he’s hosting a rollicking dinner party for Ray Charles and Elvis. It’s the kind of thing you’d expect to hear over a photographic montage of attractive gay men on a road-trip across America; an updated Clark Griswold-Family Vacation style romp around the lower 48. So much fun! So much whimsy! Remember that time we…? Ha ha ha ha ha! It sure is great to be in a montage, eh? Look at us laughing!
Then, it’s over. “Does your momma know what you’re doing?” Rufus asks repeatedly in the final chorus/breakdown and as I’m gleefully nodding to the song, if my momma did ask, I’d at the very least tell her that I’m enjoying the song. And then put it on repeat and imagine going on a road trip with Rufus Wainwright.
