‘Dark Shadows’ trailer shows Barnabas Collins as displaced hero
After months of quiet on the marketing front, Warner Bros. today released the trailer for “Dark Shadows” on another of the company’s products: Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show. It’s thrilling for those of us looking forward to Tim Burton’s big screen adaptation of the ’60s gothic soap, and the 2:30 minute trailer offers a clear look at how the movie will play out. If you prefer trailers that keep it vague, this isn’t the one for you.
Burton sets up Johnny Depp’s Barnabas Collins as a vampire hero displaced in time. Being cursed by a witch to sleep for 200 years and waking up in 1972 will do that to a monster. Seeing his expansive family, including Michelle Pfeiffer and Jonny Lee Miller, falling into economic and social ruin, Barnabas pledges to revive the Collins name. It’s all well and good and very campy and cute because poor Barnabas doesn’t know what TVs are and can’t drive a car, but then old witchie, Eva Green’s Angelique, returns and all hell breaks loose. You know how it goes — all set to a fun 70s-era soundtrack!
Will Barnabas be able to rescue his friends and family? Will Ellen DeGeneres’ army of middle-aged viewers nostalgic for the original “Dark Shadows” go see a revamp? Will younger movie-goers be intrigued by a cult franchise imbued with the cinematic powers of Tim Burton? Tune in, yada, yada.
