Dan Savage on Santorum saying he’ll pray for him: ‘I’ll gay for him.’

Mar 20, 2012

The topic of Dan Savage came up during a recent interview Rick Santorum did with right-wing website ReaClearReligion. It’s only natural that Santorum should be asked about the gay activist and columnist: it was, after all, Savage who started the 2003 contest to redefine the homophobic then-senator’s surname. The winner, we all know by now, was “the frothy mixture of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the by-product of anal sex,” which was for years the number one Google result when searching “Santorum.” He tried, and failed, to get Google to clear his name.

Santorum has previously said he wouldn’t even discuss Savage, because “he’s below the dignity of anybody,” but he toned down his response for RealClearReligion, saying that he’ll pray for Savage.

“I would tell him that I’m praying for him. He obviously has some serious issues. You look at someone like that who can say and do the things that he’s doing and you just pray for him and hopefully he can find peace,” said Santorum, employing the self-righteous patronization so common among Christian crusaders like himself.

Wondering what Savage had to say about this, Mother Jones journalist Andy Kroll shot him an email. Here is how Savage responded:

Rick Santorum thinks that women who have been raped should be compelled—by force of law—to carry the babies of their rapists to term, he thinks birth control should be illegal, he wants to prosecute pornographers, etc., etc., basically the guy wants to be president so that he can micromanage the sex lives of all Americans…and I’m the one with issues? Because I made a dirty joke at his expense eight or nine years ago and it stuck? I’m the one with issues?

Okaaaaaaaaaaaaaay.

Rick can pray for me. I’ll gay for him. And we can call it even.

If you ask me, Rick got the long end of the stick on this one!
