Borat-version of Kazakh Anthem played during medal ceremony in Kuwait

There’s no bigger honor in sports than standing on top of the medal stand, hand over heart, watching your nation’s flag rise to the rafters as your national anthem blares from the speakers. Athletes are frequently moved to tears by these medal ceremonies, swelling with pride of their accomplishment and their country.

For this Kazakhstan female athlete it was certainly a moment she won’t forget, unfortunately for all the wrong reasons. A YouTube video shows the Borat parody of her country’s anthem playing during the ceremony after she won gold at some event in Kuwait.

Playing Ricky Martin at the opening of a regional ski festival is hilarious, but this is more reminiscent of a slap in the face. Two national anthem faux pas is a month seems a little fishy, but if it would happen to anyone it would be Kazakhstan.

Now, I must admit, unlike the “Livin’ La Vida Loca” video, this seems doctored. I highly doubt that an athlete would stand calmly on the medal stand while a song mocking their country is blasted through the speakers, let alone smile about it afterwards. She barely flinched at the glaring mistake throughout the song. Either she’s the most professional and collected athlete in the world, has next-to-zero national pride, or the the sound of the video is compromised.

You decide for yourself.
