Today in Moscow’s Garden Circle, Pussy Riot supporters are protesting the detainment of band members Maria Alehina, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, and Irina Loktina with the Party Riot Bus, in which a news conference, art display and other performances will be held.
Pussy Riot, a feminist Riot Grrrl punk band and offshoot of the infamous anarchist art collective Voina, fell afoul of both church and state after standing at the altar of Moscow’s Christ the Saviour Cathedral and performing a musical number calling on the Virgin Mary to chase Vladimir Putin away.
A Moscow court responded by ordering the detainment of Alehina, Nadezhda and Tolokonnikava until April 24th—a date that will see a number of international protests in support of Pussy Riot.
Pussy Riot is certainly one of the most interesting bands in the world right now, and probably the most overtly political. The music is, of course, secondary to the politics, but one would hope that these girls put together an album sooner or later.
