Mozilla comes out against CISPA

Mozilla, creators of the Firefox browser, and opponents of SOPA/PIPA, have now come out against CISPA.

CISPA, or Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, would create an information-sharing apparatus between private entities and the NSA. The worry is that in the name of national and corporate security, internet users’ privacy would be sacrificed.

Late Tuesday, Mozilla’s Privacy and Public Policy sent a letter to Forbes’ Andy Greenberg, which reads:

While we wholeheartedly support a more secure Internet, CISPA has a broad and alarming reach that goes far beyond Internet security. The bill infringes on our privacy, includes vague definitions of cybersecurity, and grants immunities to companies and government that are too broad around information misuse. We hope the Senate takes the time to fully and openly consider these issues with stakeholder input before moving forward with this legislation.

CISPA enjoys wide support in the tech and telecommunications industry, with Facebook, Apple and Microsoft and others in favor of the legislation. With the bill having recently passed through the House and on its way to the Senate, perhaps Mozilla’s position will lead the way in a larger opposition effort.
