Tenacious D ‘Rize of the Fenix’ video premieres, melts computer screens

The D is back.

The beauty of what Tenacious D is doing with their comeback “Rize of the Fenix” is that they’re incorporating how much everyone hated their 2006 movie “The Pick of Destiny” into the storyline—as if it was all part of the narrative instead of something that happened in real life. “‘The Pick of Destiny’ was a bomb,” intones Jack Black in the new video, as that movie’s CD soundtrack hovers above his hands and then blows up. Genius.

The rest of “Rize of the Fenix” continues to focus on whether Tenacious D actually sucks, in which case fans will need to get their “D tattoos laser removed,” or whether they are in fact, “legit—2 legit to quit,”—and they actually take it there with the MC Hammer reference.

The new video pulls out all the stops—space, sorcery, dragon-fighting, a naked green screen—it’s pretty epic. Take a look below.
