“He was one of the greatest, greatest voices in country, rockabilly and rock & roll,” Bruce Springsteen said of Levon Helm, the recently fallen drummer and singer for The Band. Springsteen was in Newark, New Jersey last night, wrapping up a leg of his Wecking Ball tour, when he launched into a cover of “The Weight” in tribute to Helm.
“He had a feel on the drums,” Springsteen said, and continued in the weathered tones of a rock shaman: “it comes from a certain place in the past and you can’t replicate it.” Spoken like only The Boss knows how. Check out the close-up version with annoying graphics below, as well as an long shot with the pre-song banter included.
