Watch the commercial for… America (really)

So you’re flipping the channels one night and thinking “gee, I sure want to move to a country where I can ride my convertible and play rhythm guitar for Roseanne Cash’s incredibly diverse backing band.” Shockingly, there is a place for you to go for that. No, it’s not Dave & Busters. It’s America. You may be aware of it.

The commercial below, which cost $12.3 million to make, features Roseanne Cash on guitar while a fast-paced edit of American landmarks flashes before the viewer, Johnny Mneunomic style. There’s New Orleans. There’s a crawfish boil a-happenin’. There’s the Golden Gate bridge. There’s a Redwood preserve. There’s Times Square.

“It is closer than it seems / come find your land of dreams” sings Roseanne Cash, and the YouTube page provides a link for Discover America (which is America’s website, dontcha know!) The commercial is being shown in Canada, Japan, and various other countries around the world. Is it a good commercial? More than one of us here at the D&T offices thought it resembled those “Go Forth” Levis commercials from last year. Is the commercial effective or is it simply propaganda for a police state?

I think this is a great commercial.

I love the United States. Whenever I hear anyone complain about this country it reminds me of the spoiled kids on Laguna Beach complaining about their parents buying them a new Lexus instead of a BMW.

huh. when i hear people complain i gleam with pride that the heart of democracy, earnest debate (regardless of ideology), is still beating. i don't much care for spoiled children either, but i fail to make the same connection.

Do not mistake me, I rail against our government's actions on a daily basis. I am against virtually everything they do in our name, both here and abroad. It is when I hear Americans complain about their fellow Americans and point fingers in judgment that makes me see red.

I don't like how it is fashionable among Americans to mock Americans in this somewhat elite fashion that I see here in LA, NY, and many other large cities. It's quite infuriating, actually.

I find the problem with America is that it's a land that's run by slaves in other countries without the citizen's prior knowledge. Once the dollar dies, there's going to a major humanitarian disaster. Who's going to defend the Americans when they actually have to work to survive?

=-p good to be from Texas the depression didn't really affect us, and if we decide the U.S is failing us far to much we can become our own country again, we did a better job anyway.
