When bands take songs on the road, they naturally progress over time into something considerably different than what was on the record. For solo electronic artists like Grimes, it’s difficult to achieve that natural progression as precision tends to be key to success against the odds of playing the song correctly.
That being said, it’s cool to hear a song like “Vanessa” naturally progress without the benefit of any co-conspirators. On this version of “Vanessa,” one of Claire Boucher’s best and most haunting songs, there’s more space and plenty of robotic rhythmic elements as well a nifty synth guitar line. As the Youtube caption puts it — “‘Vanessa’ meets ‘Visions.’”
