I don’t want to debate Ben & Jerry’s vs Häagen-Dazs—it’s like arguing over John Hamm vs Ryan Gossling—but I do believe in giving credit where it’s due. And Vermont’s favorite altruistic, Greatful Dead-loving brand deserves credit for creating and popularizing one of the best corporate-sponsored international holidays: Free Cone Day.
Ben and Jerry started the tradition back in 1979 on the one-year anniversary of their company’s inception to thank their customers for their success, and they’ve celebrated every year since. And lucky for us, thanks to FCD’s popularity, Häagen-Dazs has decided to follow suit. So now instead of having one Free Cone Day, ice cream lovers in the U.S. have two.
For Häagen-Dazs’ Free Cone Day, participating stores are offering a free scoop from 4pm-8pm today. It’s just another way that Ben & Jerry’s mellow vibes are rippling out into the world, creating good will and free ice cream wherever they go. (Giveaways are also famously good for sales, but I’m pretty sure that’s just a karmic byproduct.)
Check out participating locations on their Facebook page. There are quite a few in NYC.
