This past weekend, anti-Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) installed TPP TP (that is, toilet paper) throughout the hotel bathrooms where the negotiations are being held.
TPP, of course, is a trade agreement similar to ACTA, which would censor the internet in an effort to fight online piracy, amongst other things. Since it’s a trade agreement and not a treaty, negotiations can be held in secret. Democracy at its finest and with President Obama’s full consent. That, folks, is the change we need.
The Yes Man, a culture jamming group of political pranksters (famous for the Billionaires for Bush website), also got in on the TPP action. The group staged an award ceremony for U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk, who gave the keynote address at the official TPP reception on Friday. Apparently, The Yes Men dressed as businessmen and awarded the US trade representative negotiators the “2012 Corporate Power Tool Award” for negotiating the TPP without public input. They also called on Kirk to accept the award on behalf of the USTR.
Saturday also saw a protest outside the hotel grounds.
