I’m going to give you a list of current rap artists that have released a freestyle over “John”, a Lil’ Wayne/Rick Ross track from 2011, and I’m going to let you pick the stand out talent: Ace Hood, Chamillionaire, Lil’ Wyte, Tyga, Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def) and Jim Jones.
If your first question was, “Wait…Chamillionaire had a career after “Ridin’ Dirty”? then your ears are in the right place. For hip-hop fans that appreciate lyricism over “swag” and champagne showers, Yasiin Bey has a quick freestyle that makes a Lil’ Wayne song worth listening to.
In the self-titled “Bey”, the artist formerly known as Mos Def almost sounds unnatural on a “trap rap” style instrumental: heavy on the bass and non-existent sampling. Not surprisingly, Bey makes it work in just under 2 and a half minutes; just one half of Black Star that “shines brighter than the dark.”
