Given all the press Jamie xx has seen on his own over the past year and a half, it was sometimes a question of whether or not The xx would ever make a followup to their much-loved 2009 debut “xx.” Luckily we had some recent performances of new material to keep us on ice.
Now it’s official: The xx will follow their debut with the highly anticipated “Coexist” on September 10 via Young Turks. Jamie had previously spoke with The Fader about how the group’s next album would be more club oriented, much like the the post-dubstep influence that had crept into his work on the Gill Scott-Heron remix album “We’re New Here” and his “Far Nearer” single.
That being said, this new demo for the song “Open Eyes,” which the band released on YouTube today, is nothing of the sort. Sparse, desolate and haunting, it’s very much in the vein of the chilly “Infinity,” a song that more or less formed the climax of their first album.
Whatever “Coexist” may hold, we eagerly anticipate its release, as well as the band’s upcoming tour where they’ll be hitting up several spots in Europe, as well as Japan and a few U.S. shows.
Check out the “Open Eyes” demo, as well as their upcoming summer tour dates below.
