Dave Longstreth has directed a new video for the “Gun Has No Trigger,” the first single from the Dirty Projectors’ new album “Swing Lo Magellan.” Though it doesn’t look fancy, as you might expect from a high-brow art rock band the video has a smarty-pants concept behind it that Longstreth outlined eloquently in a press release:
“Gun Has No Trigger” is about the possibility for true dissent, and how I can’t figure out what that could be. What is a 2012 Exodus from the Society of the Spectacle (to mix language Situationist and Rastafari)? So we made a video from the iconography of the default profile image used by Facebook and Gmail, and also the look of the classic Apple iPod commercials. The colors in the background are the ones I think of when I hear the harmonies of Amber and Haley (via experimental synesthesia). Enjoy!!
Revolution and corporation have become intertwined: Social revolutions these days play out over our iPhones and across our Facebook and Twitter accounts. You revolutionaries may talk about unplugging and deleting your Facebook accounts, but Longsthreth knows you never will, largely because it would defeat the whole point. Your gun has no trigger. Whoa, man…that’s a lot to say with one static shot and a couple lights.
