Dent May, who recently released “Do Things” on Animal Collective’s label Paw Tracks, has released a cover of Grateful Dead’s “Shakedown Street.” The original is funky with a disco beat, and far more Stevie Wonder than traditional Dead, but it’s a charming, romantic little track. Dent May keeps his cover fairly close to the tone of the original but infuses it with a lo-fi ’80s aesthetic in the vein of R. Stevie Moore or Ariel Pink. It works, to a degree, but it also sounds kind of cheesy.
