Last week, Chan Marshall, better known as Cat Power broke her silence with a new song and a release-day announcement for her long-awaited eighth album, “Sun.” That song was “Ruin” and it’s an awesomely propulsive foot-tapper.
“Ruin” and new song “Cherokee,” which will be “Sun”‘s opening number are extremely promising for what might be one of the best albums of Marshall’s career. Some may still pine for the soul-searching acoustics of “Moon Pix” or her mid-00s Memphis phase, but these two songs indicate that “Sun” may be the needed inward kick into Marshall’s third decade of record-making.
Listen to “Cherokee” over at NPR, and if you haven’t heard “Ruin” yet, give it a listen below while Marshall spray paints it on your brain.
