Last week, word broke of a new Lana Del Rey video for her new single “National Anthem” that would feature Harlem rapper A$AP Rocky in the role of JFK and herself as Jackie O. “Some cool trippy shit, some real 2015 shit”, said Rocky, “People are going to get it in three years, and that’s the whole purpose of it.”
The characteristically larger-than-life drama of this four minute trailer for the video is enough for us to take the bait. Much like the trailer for LDR’s “Born to Die” video which featured a continuous shot of a topless Del Rey in the arms of a hunky tattooed guy, this clip consists of a loop of Del Rey and Rocky locked in a lovelorn gaze will the latter sucks in and blows huge puffs of smoke. Little bits and clips of what’s in store for the final version of the video are interspersed throughout.
It looks pretty epic and may be the most hilariously overblown short film of the summer but something tells me I know how it’s going to end. Now if only we can get Rocky to throw a verse on the track, then we’d really have something.
