Diamond Rings is back with a new song and video which looks and sounds like outrageous arena-pop circa 1989. The confidence-boosting anthem “I’m Just Me” is a far cry from the bedroom indie pop of “Special Affectations.” John O’Regan’s crispy tenor is still in place but behind it are four-on-the-floor dance beats, crunchy guitars, and expansive synths. The video finds O’Regan sporting a “Sub-Zero”-style vest as he rocks out among a wash of smoke, green lasers, and erotic male dancers.
It’s hard to tell if fans of jangly tracks like “Wait and See” will be digging this clubbier direction but we’re curious to see how it unfolds on his next album which is expected to drop on Astralwerks in the fall.
