Study says 75% of women won’t date unemployed men

Dating service It’s Just Luch conducted a survey of 925 people and concluded something that many of the human-Garfields might find shocking: three quarters of the women surveyed said that it would be unlikely they would date an unemployed guy while a full 33% of those surveyed said that they would not date them at all.

The survey also notes that two thirds of the men surveyed wouldn’t have a problem dating an unemployed woman and 46% of those surveyed said they would definitely be OK with it.

Speaking of It’s Just Lunch, here’s Maria Bamford’s take on the too-easy-to-be-true dating service:

Not surprising, men are more tolerant of someone being in the same situation as a lot of people in our country.

I spent the past two years of my life with a guy that couldn't keep a job… Not due to lack of skills or opportunity, but bc he suffered from a horrible addiction. I certainly don't think I could do it again… I think women assess men based off employment bc, as long as men are able to do physical labor-it seems like there are always jobs available to them (albeit shitty ones). Its a huge red flag for a lot of women, because joblessness can be symptomatic of deeper issues. But oh, what do I know?

I actually expect you know a lot. For example, from your first sentence, you're an exception to the rule, with a lot of character, but you eventually let him go, because there is a line. Those "physical labor" jobs often hire based on nepotism and not actual skills or knowledge. A lot of them aren't hiring, because people are just flat out cutting back on the handiwork end of the service industry.
In this case, unemployment is still high, and a lot of things need to happen/change/improve. If unemployment has recently dropped in an area, then that could mean there are even fewer positions available for skilled/unskilled labor, or that the pool of workers has shrunk, because people have moved; or that some people have just given up and are no longer looking, for now.
I agree that if a person (male OR female) tends to bounce from position to position, it can be signs of a problem, but in some cases, like your physical labor one, it's seasonal/temporary employment.

One other thing is that jobs that don't require a college education often won't hire someone who has it, simply because they're overqualified. So if the market, as it is, is currently flooded with guys who are unmarried, and ergo have not settled down, have a college education, and therefore might feel entitled to try and climb through the ranks, they flat out just won't hire you, especially if your degree is in an unrelated field, in the opinion of their HR department. A good example of non-physical labor jobs is insurance consultancy, done over the phone. Those places can pick through whatever candidates they want, and turn down whoever they feel like.
