D’Angelo wows the BET Awards with new song; fantastic return after 12 years
If you weren’t watching last night’s BET Awards last night you missed out on two awesome pop culture moments: Samuel L. Jackson and Spike Lee singing their own version of Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “Niggas In Paris” and D’Angelo’s jaw-dropping performance.
D’Angelo could be described as the J.D. Salinger of R&B – he took a four and a half year break between his first and second album and a twelve year break between his last album and his upcoming album. Long periods of artistic gestation are almost unheard of in the up-to-the-minute fight to stay relevant in the hip-hop and R&B community. D’Angelo’s soulful, original, and fan-fucking-tastic performance last night was a much needed return to the spotlight for the singer who many assumed had just dropped off after seemingly only surfacing the last few years for minor legal issues, gaining 100lbs, and guest spots on random soundtracks (“Scream 2″ soundtrack, anyone?).
A (thankfully) toned D’Angelo performed his slow-jam smash hit “(Untitled)” and a new song reportedly written by him and legendary MC Q-Tip. Take a look for yourself – this is total dancing-at-your-desk music if you’re stuck at work this Monday morning, so put some headphones on and turn it up … D’Angelo deserves a welcome back.
