“Bikini body” t-shirts are always inappropriate on the grounds of being trashy, but bikini body onesies are decisively worse. This one offended parents at Gordman’s in Southaven, Mississippi this week.
After receiving an email about the item, Action News 5 “took to the streets,” prodding parents for an opinion. Naturally, several found the piece “very inappropriate for an 18-month-old girl.”
But not everyone agreed. One parent took the “this is just a joke, everyone needs to lighten up” angle.
And she’s right, it is a joke, just a really trashy one that disturbs us the way “Toddlers in Tiaras” does. Like, why make a baby look like a full grown woman in a pink bikini? Even if some find it funny, can’t they do better while keeping the baby a baby? What about “Survival of the Cutest” or “iPeed” or just a picture of french fries or something?
And even if this wasn’t a case of sexualizing little girls (which it is, obviously), it would still look creepy, like the paintings of baby Jesus back in the 13th century when they used to give him adult proportions. It’s skeezy, and it’s unfair to the baby who isn’t old enough to know it’s embarrassing.
