San Diego’s fireworks show, the “Big Bay Boom,” was a total bust last night when a signal malfunction caused operators to light every single firework at once, 5 minutes before the show was supposed to start. Three different barges in the bay each shot off hundreds of fireworks all at once. What was supposed to be a seventeen minute show was over in a gigantic, booming flash, and then it was done, leaving a stunned silence filled with the sound of car alarms going off across the city and the sound of “Born in the USA” hanging in the air.

I remember going with my sister to an overnight July 4, 1976 bicentennial celebration at Federal Hill, Baltimore. At the culmination a barge was supposed to fire a pyrotechnic then Fort McHenry was to respond. We had to suffer through a night of horrible entertainers like Marty Allen doing some stupid pantomime of American history. When I finally came time for the fireworks something was lighted on the barge and I noticed two men hastily diving off of it. Like San Diego the entire compliment of pyrotechnics on the barge went off at once. My sister and I should have driven the forty miles to Washington D.C. for the best demonstration in the U.S.
