We’ve been covering a lot from the upcoming Fleetwood Mac tribute album “Just Tell Me That You Want Me” at Death and Taxes, from Lykke Li and Antony Hegarty’s‘s lovely renditions of “Silver Springs” and “Landslide” respectively, to Best Coast‘s foolhardy major keyinversion of “Rhiannon.”
With their cover of “Dreams,” The Kills prove like Best Coast did that the more divergent from the Mac path, the worse off you are. It’s not so much that this cover fails at what it’s going for — effectively turning the original’s soft rock glow into a roadside threat, but its chorus stumbles on itself rather than exploding outward. It’s also hard to break free of the original version’s valor finish giving this gritty interpretation an awkward juxtaposition. Perhaps in a “Rumours”-less world one could enjoy this song’s tense dirge but with Alison Mosshart keeping the original melody in tact, it’s hard to not start piecing together the original in your head while listening.
