Marijuana helps you lose weight, apparently

Now, before I get into this any further, don’t go out and buy a pizza and eat it in an entire sitting. That is just awesome wrong.

LA Weekly and the UK’s The Telegraph both report that marijuana lowers cholesterol in mice by raising the metabolism and has been linked to weight loss. Those findings are now being experimented with humans, in a British study, to study the effects of marijuana and weight loss.

Pot famously makes you want to eat more. While the stereotypical overweight stoner does apply to those who sit around all day funneling kettle corn into their mouths while watching “The West Wing” reruns (hello, me in 2010!) – but the reason many get so hungry while smoking pot is that their metabolism seems to be going sky high.

The reason is because THC chemicals are connecting to your hamulus in your brain and are tricking you into thinking you're hungry. The hamulus controls your body temperature and hunger levels. It has nothing to do with metabolism.

which would in turn have nothing to do with weight loss. Smoking anything speeds up my metabolism.

Yeah… That is what they taught you in school. They are saying it could be something else as well. That is why it is called research. So, yes, it could have something to do with metabolism. It isn't known yet and that is why you should reserve judgment instead of just trying to sound smart.

The research says your metabolism is increased when you smoke pot. The research does not dispute what I said. In fact, in this article it does not mention anything at all about the other factors of increased hunger. So, to me, it sounded as if the person writing the article did not know already that there was a scientific explanation for why you experience increased hunger after smoking weed. Also, if people's metabolism are increasing, and they are supplementing that with food, then they would stay at a the same constant weight they are at without smoking pot. So you have to take into consideration the significant "munchies" some people get when they do smoke weed. I was just stating that the affect on the hypothalamus is increasing the "want" for hunger. SOOOO what I'm saying is that the research they are conducting is somewhat pointless because if people are going to smoke pot and hit up McDonald's for a Big Mac meal then that seems to me that it will only further contribute to higher cholesterol. Also, Trevor… I don't need to "try" to start smart because I already know I am, jerk-face.

And i was talking about reading the articles. First, they say the chemicals tested reduced hunger and the metabolic effect countermanded it "Although cannabis is better known for inducing hunger in those who smoke it, known as the munchies. when the scientists examined two compounds, called THCV and cannabidiol, they were found to have an appetite suppressing effect.", "It has raised hopes that the drugs can be developed into treatments for obesity related diseases and type 2 diabetes." Sooooo…. decreased hunger via the routes you were talking about (I think) but increased appetite possibly from metabolic effects. Secondly, increased hunger and increased metabolism do not necessarily balance and so weight loss or gain can be expected. Last, the increased metabolism can affect choices over foods. Decreased blood sugars associated with higher metabolism may explain food choices. High caloric intake does not HAVE to be associated with increased cholesterol and so it still could do the job when part of a program. Which is what they are proposing. If you are smart, show it.

That being said all of this is still up in the air and I don't have access to any of their papers. You could be right in the long run and I'm sure the effect you mentioned has something to do with it. The media (especially a source like this) is particularly bad at reporting science/technology stories that aren't consumer products. That just isn't what the article says and it's usually not a good idea to just discount it because of some prior information you remember. Remember they did get this from a researcher who, hopefully, was considering your point before they made claims.

The person who wrote this article probably did not know about your hypothalamus increasing hunger, considering they did not mention it in here. When they said that the reason many get so hungry while smoking pot is because they're metabolism is sky high they were leaving out the part completely of the effect it has on your hypothalamus. Also, I believe those compounds are not found in every type of cannabis so then where would that leave the others with the increased hunger? I was just attempting to correct their statement, instead of them misleading readers.

I meant this article they linked to: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/science-news/9383640/Cannabis-could-be-used-to-treat-obesity-related-diseases.html and I am pretty sure those guys knew what you are talking about.

I know! I meant the person writing the article listed above… I just meant I don't think that their claim was including the other aspects. I am in no way trying to challenge a scientist.
