Gabby Douglas did quite wonderfully at the Olympics, inspiring hundreds if not thousands of African American woman across the nation. And then NBC aired a commercial with a monkey doing gymnastics right after Bob Costas finished talking about what an inspiration Gabby must be. Take a look for yourself:

Haven't watched NBC in a long time! Glad I don't!!!!

Uhhhhh, I watched it, and I never connected Gabby to a monkey. What does it say about you that you did?

I didn't make that connection at all, and they have been running ads for that stupid show all week. I'm sure someone thought, "oh, he's talking about gymnastics! Let's use the gymnastics one now." There are comedians I like that are going to be on that show, but it looks stupid as hell.

Agreed, Mrs. Buckley, and might I add, that baby is fucking adorable.

Why thank you! And she watched the gymnastics last night and was fascinated…but it was probably the bright colors and movement, not a true appreciation of the sport.

Indeed.
Answer me this: why isn't roller derby an Olympic sport? Hmmm???
August 03, 2012 at 3:57 pm, Andrea TheAnnihilatrix Buckley said:
Ugh, don't get me started. That has been the center of derby gossip for the last couple years, primarily because the roller skate people with authority to advance roller sports for olympics consideration (USARS) created its own arbitrary rule set that most of the sport does not use. So the WFTDA leagues (the main derby association, kind of like the NFL of derby) are all mad at the USARS folks and USARS thinks everyone should just love them too… Drama!

Oh, I thought it was his actual comment. African American girls? How about Girls in general? I thought the poor monkey looked to be in pain. I thought they weren't supposed to use real monkeys for commercial purposes. Yecch to the entire segment.

I made that connection as well. I am not a racist nor do I think that making that connection implies that I am if that's what trish is getting at. As sensitive of a topic as racism is in sports, still to this very day, you would think NBC would be a little smarter than to air a commercial of a monkey on parallel bars just seconds after talking about the first african american gymnast to win gold in the all around. Perhaps it wasn't deliberate but stupid none the less.

Do this commercial will open doors to make fun of every single race in the world? Is unbelieveble that at the year that we are, some well educated but ignorant people, still thinking that makeing fun of other just because they do not look the same. I am so sorry for all of us and the future generations.

As I watched the news on NBC Channel 4 last night after watching Olympic coverage on the same channel that Gaby Douglas won the Olympics all-around gold medal; however Gaby Douglas was never mentioned for her accomplishment throughout the broadcast. Not in the Olympic portion of the news or the sports section.
Shame on KNBC News Los Angeles for not even mentioning Gaby Douglas wining the All-around Gold Medal in Gymnastic.

If anyone is watching the Olympics on NBC LA Channel 4, watch the news afterwards, their advertising beforehand to talk about the controversy about Gaby’s hair. No mention of her gold medal success last night but to tonight let’s talks about her hair to further dilute her historic accomplishment. Please continue to positively celebrate Gabby Douglas success as the 2012 Olympics All Around Woman’s Gymnastics Gold Medal Winner. And I did see the commercial with the monkey before. It a tactic used in the media called subliminal stimuli.
