90 year-old Dr William Bell, father of 1984 Olympic bronze medalist Earl Bell, broke the world record for the over-90 age group in pole vault this week, launching himself over a 7’2″ pole.
After watching Gabby Douglas’s aerial flips on the floor last night, and then seeing this white wisp of an old man sprint down a runway and toss himself over a seven-foot pole, I’m pretty much tapped out on inspiration for the week. Athletes everywhere, I need a rest. Take a load off, guys.
What’s most impressive is that Dr. Bell still jumps three times a week at his son’s training center in Jonesboro, Arkansas. I don’t know anything about his marital status, but if he’s looking and 86 year-old gymnast Joanna Quaas is still on the market, I bet they’d be quite a match.
