I’m a believer that certain music goes with specific seasons—not just because you fell in love with a record at a particular time, although there’s definitely something to be said for associative nostalgia. But The xx is band whose moody, brooding tunes belong to the darker seasons the same way Carly Rae Jespen’s “Call Me Maybe” belongs to summer. It just fits.
The xx’s new record “Coexist” promises to coax our comedown this fall, releasing next month. We’ve heard the first official track “Angels” as well as a smattering of live songs, and today we get the second official stream, “Chained.”
It’s classic xx, a tune about loss and longing with Romy Madley-Croft’s Robert Smith style guitar dancing around some ambient swells from Jamie and dueling Oliver Sim’s smoky baritone. Take a listen and enjoy a visual accompaniment below.
