If you haven’t yet, you are going to want to go ahead and start listening to Field Report.
Field Report is the brainchild of Chris Porterfield, former bandmate of Justin Vernon from DeYarmond, before Vernon moved the band to North Carolina to make Bon Iver about as famous and successful as you can get as a folk-ish singer-songwriter, and Porterfield stayed behind in Wisconsin to keep working a job, stay married, and keep writing songs of his own.
But don’t feel too bad for him—five years and god-knows how many songs later Porterfield is coming into his own. He recorded his new debut full length “Field Report” in Vernon’s personal studio with Paul Kolderie producing (Radiohead, the Pixes) and this summer Counting Crows asked him to accompany them on tour. He recently quit his day job and is now off playing music full time.
Which is a win for us—Porterfield’s songs and voice have the rugged, timeless quality of a guy who’s been been worn in. It’s got the kind of weariness you can’t fake and a soulfulness that cuts on first listen. Grab a free download of “I Am Not Waiting Anymore” over at Diffuser.fm.
