The Beastie Boys are suing Monster Energy Drink for using their songs in a promotion for an event they sponsored called “Ruckus in the Rockies.” As SPIN reports, the claim alleges that Monster Energy Drink “willfully, maliciously, and oppressively” used portions of Beastie Boys songs in various promos and three-minute-plus videos to promote the event. 26 total songs were used in various promotional material for the event.
DJ Z-trip headlined the festival and also created a Beastie Boys Mega Mix for it. In one of the promotional videos their was text that accompanied the mix which read, “With tracks from the Beastie Boys putting you in the vibe and a sponsorship from Monster Energy, this edit will make you want to ride and party like no other.”
Even worse, this material allegedly was posted on May 9, a mere five days after Adam Yauch’s death. The Beastie Boys are seeking an injunction and statutory damages of $150,000 for each infringement.
