The Lego company, which is celebrating 50 years in Japan, recently asked schoolchildren to join the Build Up Japan project, which called for a giant map of Japan to be built. A futuristic map, it seems. The children were allowed to envision a future Japan that only existed in their minds. It was only when the various pieces were ultimately assembled in Tokyo that the full effect was realized.
There is something vaguely Borgesian in this Lego exercise’s detail that should appeal to the dreamers, fantasists, and lovers of stories and landscapes in all of us.
