If you’re interested in hearing what it would sound like if The xx and The Cure circa 1979 had a torrid love affair, and then their child grew up to be smart and brooding but well-adjusted enough to make grounded, instantly relatable melodies, you should probably check out Shy Hunters.
Having toured independently supporting badasses from Yoko Ono to Marc Ribot, Sam Levin and Indigo Street met and started writing together in 2009, which produced their first single “Time Bomb” and now “Stained Glass House,” which they’re premiering today. Getting sick of folks comparing everything to stuff like the XX and the Cure. Talk about a limited reference palette. Caught these guys yesterday and liked what I saw enough to look them up. Nice big sound for a three piece band. If anything, they sound like a missing link between some of the late eighties/early nineties 4AD shoegaze bands, when they were still putting "real" music out, and some of the American Indie bands of the era. Think early Tsunami. All in all, enjoyed the show.
