After all that media attention drummed up by Drag Queen Barbie, Mattel announced today that the doll (officially named “Blond Diamond Barbie”) is no cross dresser.

“The term was both created by and incorrectly perpetuated by members of the press,” a Mattel spokesperson told The Daily Beast. “It’s a surprise to all of us,” the doll’s designer, David Blond agreed. “It was never Drag Queen Barbie.”

So just because Blond Diamond Barbie was created by a drag queen, and modeled after a drag queen, doesn’t mean she’s necessarily a drag queen herself.

We’re not convinced, and we stand by the claim that all Barbies are drag queen Barbies if you want them to be. Things are pretty ambiguous beneath her dresses, and as Mattel’s VP of U.S. Marketing told the New York Times earlier this month, “Barbie doesn’t worry about what other people think.”
