Mitt Romney has struggled to distance himself from Obamacare since last summer, when in the early stages of his campaign the obvious similarities between RomneyCare and Obamacare made it clear he’d have difficulty in credibly towing the Republican party line to overturn Obama’s plan. Obama went as far as saying RomneyCare had been the blueprint for Obamacare, but Romney insisted that what had worked for Massachusetts wouldn’t work for the nation.
If his reasons for this were unclear it’s because they were mostly convoluted, relying on some offense to the “interstate commerce clause,” a principle average Americans totally hold more dearly than their own health. To date, Romney has never given a satisfactory answer to the question, Why not expand what you did in Massachusetts to the nation?
Now BuzzFeed has dug up a video from ’08 of Romney saying he’d do exactly that. A reporter asks, “you supported national healthcare in Massachusetts, are you going to the same thing on a national—” and before he can even finish Romney blurts out “Absolutely, I’ve already put a plan out—take a look at it. Get on my website, take a look.”
Of course if you actually go to his website now, you’ll find a recent article called “I Will Repeal Obamacare.”
Take a look below.
