John Cale releases ‘Face to the Sky’ video

John Cale has releases his music video for “Face to the Sky,” the second single from his forthcoming album, “Shifty Adventures in Nookie Wood,” out October 2nd on Domino Records’ imprint, Double Six. The video was directed by Tom Scholefield (aka Kon Om Pax). This follows the release of Cale’s first single, “I Wanna Talk 2 U,” produced by Danger Mouse.

Of the song’s conception, Cale says, “I was really into some swirling strings and rhythms for this, but I didn’t want it to end up being too complete. I started this with a keyboard riff that seemed impossible to play and then from there I began layering with the idea of really breaking up the comfort level with things that poke out of the track to never quite let you settle in.”

The song finds Cale on top of his game, combining analog instrumentation with sound collage and swirling electronic arrangement. In the video, Cale paces oddly and moves robotically around a checkered floor in a static camera shot. Intercut with his scenes are shots of a robed dancer doing various contortions.

John Cale was a major inspiration to me as a teenager, and he's still brilliant.
