It’s too soon to call murderers ‘Pussy Riot supporters’

An elderly woman, 76, and her daughter, 38, were found dead in their apartment in Kazan, Russia yesterday with “Free Pussy Riot” drawn on the wallpaper in blood. The women had multiple stab wounds, and investigators estimate they’d been dead between three and five days.

The story broke just a few hours ago—no one knows yet who killed them and why, whether it was an insane person’s seriously misguided attempt at pro-Pussy Riot protest, someone against the punk collective seeking to cripple their reputation, or on the far end, the Russian government trying to win back support by demonizing the band after the protests following their sentencing.

The three jailed members’ lawyer called the killing “a dirty provocation,” writes The Moscow Times. The lawyer added that Pussy Riot’s supporters are “mostly people who stick to legal ways of protest.”

The Moscow Times wrote:

While a Pussy Riot supporter might have been involved, all signs point to a robbery, including the “total mess” in the apartment, said Andrei Sheptitsky, a spokesman for regional investigators.

The killer might have written the message under the influence of alcohol or drugs or “as a cover-up,” Sheptitsky said by telephone. Alternatively, he said, the killer might have been “simply insane.”

Of course, this didn’t stop the state-run news site Vesti.ru’s from running the headline, “People Have Begun to Kill for Pussy Riot.”
