Zeus overtakes Giant George as ‘World’s Largest Dog’

Guinness World Records has replaced Giant George, the handsome Great Dane who grew from runt to 43 inches, with a new “world’s largest dog”: the 44-inch Great Dane, Zeus.

Zeus’s owner, Denise Doorlag of Michigan, told the publication that the most common comments she hears when walking Zeus are “Is that a dog or a horse?” and “Where’s his saddle?”

Very original, guys.

The tallest dog in recorded history, Zeus measures about 7 feet 4 inches when he stands on his hind legs. Standing normally, he’s about the height of an average donkey. He eats 12 cups of food each day.

[...] Zeus is 44 inches tall, just like my 7-year-old. But Zeus is only three, and standing on his hind legs, measures 7 feet 4 inches tall. If there were an all-dog basketball league, Zeus would be Manute Bol. He edges out former record-holder Giant George by a single inch, but the 12 cups of food he eats each day will probably help him maintain his competitive advantage. Link [...]

He's skinny because he has to "grow into" his weight – my sister-in-law had a g.d. named Licorice (another adorable goofball great dane!) – it seems they build the frame first then put on the weight – let's see what he looks like in a year or so:)

Zeus is poised to take the throne over someday, but Giant George is the Elder King of Big Boys – Zeus is a young whipper-snapper:) Has to get his horsey-weight on him! He'll have big piggy-paws to fill in so many ways!!!!! Not yet though!

Ok I get that he may have grown fast but you make sure your children eat when that have big growth spurts and you make sure their rib cages arent showing… there is no such thing as giving the owners a break on this kind of abuse….

My first impression is OMG, if you look at other pictures he has filled out some. Myself would not post a picture like that unless I had a later one to show how he has filled out. As the picture is yes he is too skinny.

I have had 3 Great Danes, All 32 to 34 inch not as big but they all weighted between 120 and 140.Never were they so thin as this dog. They ate 4 cups of food a day.So if he eats 12 cups he must have something wrong with him.

that dane is emaciated! discusting, the owner should be prosecuted for animal crultey. my dane is also 44inches and 7ft 10inchs from nose to tail but he weighs 251 lbs. hes 4, his son, only 2 is also 44inchs and is 85kgs already. neither of them is over weight in any way.even my other 2 danes wiegh more than that poor dog, ither that woman is blatently lying on the amount she feeds him, or he is seriously ill and should be taken to a vet imediately! I don't care that my dogs are big and I'm not interested in world records or money as they seem to be, my danes are part of my family , and are greatly loved, all I care about is that they are happy , healthy and will live a long time. [my first dane was 17 when he died, and my other was 15,] one of our danes is nearly 14 and can still outrun most other dogs and is very healthy and happy,] that woman should be ashamed of herself!

He sure is that was my thought too the ASPCA should step in i almost cried when i saw this pic of him… I am sure this poor dog's owner has gotten some sort of financial gain for the dog being "the worlds tallest dog" so why the hell dont they feed him… this is ridiculous the publicity alone on this dog should have gotten the attention of the humane society or something… To the owner of Zeus, I hope you see this… you ought to be ashamed of yourself for starving this poor animal and prosecuted for animal abuse!

he's not emaciated!!!! I own several big dogs and if you don't have them on a strict diet and keep them on the thin side they develop a lot of health problems. He is still young and will fill out more and gain a few more lbs but they are doing the right thing by not over feeding him. it's unfortunate the ignorance of others!!!!

Most dogs are over fed and so when people see a dog st a healthy weight they think the dog is under fed. Great Danes are large yes but not heavy.

That's what I was about to say. These people with their claims that he is underfed are pissing me off. Anyway, that particular breed tends to run slender even when they aren't that tall; and having rescued an underfed, emaciated dog, he would not be as active as he is in the video if he was being unfairly treated.

I think it's disgusting that a bunch of you are saying that the dog is emaciated and are so quick to judge. Are you an expert on the subject, can you tell from the picture/video that the dog is sincerely emaciated? Or are you just trying to start a bunch of drama? The dog is healthy, if it was emaciated you would be able to see every single rib and count all the vertebrae. You can also see the dogs muscle structure, if it was truly emaciated it would be skin and bones…It doesn't matter how much your dane weighs in comparison, each dog is different just like each person. I have two dogs same breed that are over 30lbs apart. They are both fed the same food same amount twice a day. One of the dogs is extremely skinny and agile, the other is built like a tank. Different metabolisms result in different bodies simple as that. The dog looks good, stop trying to pretend you know what your talking about.

You guys are being trolls. Ive had a dog that no matter how much he ate, he looked lean. Its all in the dog itself. Some just stay lean, some stay fat. Just like you guys. When you see some people that are unnaturally skinny, do you think they all starve themselves? Stop being ignorant haters just looking for someone to prowl on because you are miserable with yourself.
