See Dominic Wilcox’s ‘No Place Like Home’ shoes with embedded GPS

This may be generalizing, but I think it’s safe to say that most girls at some point in their lives have longed to own a pair of Dorothy’s ruby slippers. Even if most girls aren’t enchanted by their magic power to bring you home (I always thought that was a lame trick), who wouldn’t lust after a pair of ruby-encrusted shoes that literally twinkle in the sunlight, especially when they’re modeled by someone as cute as Judy Garland?

No one, that’s who. Including some men; specifically British designer Dominic Wilcox, who collaborated with traditional English shoemaker Stamp Shoes and interactive art technologist Becky Stewart to create these “No Place Like Home” GPS shoes. According to PSFK, the shoes will “guide you home no matter where you are in the world.”

Though the men’s shoes may not be as beautiful as the Ruby Slippers, they are pretty dapper with those red laces, and they do sparkle blinky red lights when activated. A GPS embedded in the shoe points the user in his pre-selected direction using a circle of LED lights at one shoe’s toe to indicate direction, and a line of lights on the other shoe’s toe to indicate distance.

The shoes are on display at London’s KK Outlet for Wilcox’s solo show “Variations on Normal.” Watch Wilcox demonstrate below.
