We’ve closely followed the protests, arrests and trial of Pussy Riot here at Death and Taxes, and needless to say it’s been an absurdist circus. Lost amongst the noise, color and calculated celebrity endorsements (see: Madonna), is the fact that Pussy Riot have managed to communicate critical ideas about not only Russia but oligarchical forms of government everywhere, while reminding us all that the feminist cause is far from over. Both the Russian government and its useful puppet, the Russian Orthodox Church, are incredibly paternalistic and authoritarian in approach, and Pussy Riot have proven this with their trial.

The girls are now publishing a book, “PUSSY RIOT! A Punk Prayer for Freedom,” which, according to publisher Feminist Press, “collects previously unavailable material including letters from prison, closing courtroom statements by the defense attorneys, and poems in addition to the infamous punk prayer and new translations of the powerful courtroom statements.”

Also included in the ebook are tributes from Yoko Ono, Johanna Fateman, Karen Finley, Justin Vivian Bond, Eileen Myles, and JD Samson. The book is out now and costs only $2.99, which is as cheap as an iPhone app and will benefit Pussy Riot’s defense fund.
